Apply to participate in Project EMBER: Eliminating Mathematics Barriers through Evidence-based Reforms

With support from Lumina Foundation, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU), Transforming Post-Secondary Education in Mathematics (TPSE Math) and the Association for Undergraduate Education at Research Universities (UERU), invite R1/R2 research universities to apply to participate in Project EMBER: Eliminating Mathematics Barriers through Evidence-based Reforms.

Project EMBER is a national initiative designed to help research institutions improve student success in introductory mathematics courses, which remain one of the most significant barriers to degree completion and persistence in STEM.

Institutions are invited to apply to be be one of eight research universities participating in an 15-month collaborative process (July 2026 – September 2027) focused on:

  • analyzing institutional data on gateway mathematics courses
  • conducting a thorough departmental self-assessment about introductory mathematics
  • developing institutional action plans
  • beginning to implement evidence-based instructional and structural reforms.

Participating institutions will receive:

  • guidance from two experienced project consultants
  • access to research-based reform tools and resources
  • participation in a national learning community
  • a modest participation stipend of $8,000 to support institutional engagement

Participating institutions commit to:

  • assembling a cross-functional team that includes mathematics faculty (including teaching-focused faculty), departmental leadership, and administrators
  • gathering, analyzing data on student success in introductory mathematics courses
  • completing the Project EMBER Self-Assessment, tailored to the institution
  • completing an action plan to improve student success in introductory mathematics.
